Adventures in Wonderland – Nepal

FROM LUKLA TO JUNBESI: THE SOLUKHUMBU DISTRICT

A short flight from Kathmandu up to the Himalayan region and we felt like we were in a completely different world. Lukla airport is known to be one of the most dangerous airports in Nepal and the world… it’s simply a concrete landing strip and tin shed in the middle of nowhere, and surrounded by incredible landscapes and mountains.

The First Trek

1 - The First Trek.jpg

We said goodbye to the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu, and hello to the beautiful Himalayan mountains. Our first day included a trek (and a little bit of rain) which took around four hours to get to our next stop.

Cloudy Days

2 - Cloudy Days.jpg

The Himalayan region was absolutely stunning – no matter the weather. The surroundings were quiet, dark grey clouds folded around the mountain peaks, and every little home we saw along the way was uniquely different from the last.

Grandpa

One of the locals we met along the way – he was very excited to introduce us to his very shy little granddaughter.

Sunset in the Hills

The rain lasted until nightfall, and by the time we reached our campsite it was too dark to see where we were going or what was around us. Luckily, we had amazing Sherpas from the organisation ‘Keep Walking Nepal’ and once we arrived they set up our campsite for us. We could only see around using our torch lights, so it wasn’t until the next morning that we actually saw the village.

Stay tuned for day 2!

Boss Lady Mia Plecic on her entrepreneurial highs and lows

44247779_298091004362885_6384695030493094397_n

Mia Plecic always knew she was destined for success – she was just 23 years old when she started her first business where she quickly turned $1000 into $1 million and has successfully founded 6 companies since venturing into the world of business.

When asked if Mia comes from an entrepreneurial family and if that is what drove her to the world of business, she says she’s asked that same question quite often, but in her situation, that’s just not the case.

“Although my family do run small micro sized businesses, they are all very much ‘comfort zone’ enterprises, nothing to the extent that I dream to run. Growing up in a small coastal town generally means small mind mentalities. I still wonder to this day where the fire inside me started, but from such a young age I always had such a fascination for business, money and what it can buy,” says Mia.

Mia’s first start-up was in 2015, Pearly Whites Australia – a teeth whitening company that would turn over millions in revenue.

The idea started simply as a thought one night while scrolling through her Instagram feed.

“In-home teeth whitening kits were a new trend and I jumped on the idea instantly, in fact, I had my first sale within 12 hours, before I even had any stock in hand,” she says.

“I’m the first to admit that I am no innovator. I don’t create products, I simply see new products that are trending in the market, I re-brand them and sell them through the Ecommerce platform. I know how to use Social Media to sell and know how to brand a product which is the most important part in my eyes.”

Mia says her life was flipped upside down when she was misled by a business partner amidst the success of Pearly White Australia and within a day was selling her shares of the business.

At the time, it could not have been more devastating, but when reflecting on that time in her life, Mia says that it was an integral part of how she would conduct herself and her businesses moving forward.

“I look back now, and I am beyond grateful for that challenging experience. It grew me as a businesswoman like nothing else could,” she says.

“I grew resilience, strength and courage I didn’t even know I had in me. I have also grown credibility, people respect my vulnerability, my courage to pick myself up, brush myself off and move on.”

“Business is never smooth sailing, nor is life. Any business person who tells you that it is, is lying to you. I learnt that giving up is not an option and that continually learning along every step of the way is crucial.”

Mia doesn’t believe in failure, only lessons to be learnt, a quality you will see from some of the most successful people.

41809122_2098011990451223_2595886240304415982_n

This was just a bump in the road for her and Mia has since founded 5 other very successful companies, runs a YouTube channel and is very active social media influencer.

It takes a lot of dedication and strength to back yourself within your own business and that is what Mia does, backs herself without fear or hesitation.

“You have to be fearless, 100%. Scared in business isn’t even in my dictionary, I pride myself in being courageous. I love the challenge, I love the excitement, business is a game to me and the highest number wins.”

“I don’t let success define me. I’ve learnt to be tough in business, resilient. It’s a rat eat rat, dog eat dog world and I’ve had to grow that mentality over the course of my business growth. It sounds harsh, but it’s a harsh world in business – I have learnt to back myself, believe in myself, even when nobody else believes in me.”

Mia’s mission is to inspire other women to have a go, create a dream life, find a purpose and walk right when everyone else is walking left.

Her advice to others who have thought about becoming an entrepreneur, but have been afraid to take the leap, is to defy all odds and not care what others think or say.

“Chances are the people with big opinions are simply too scared to take the chances in which you are courageous enough to take. Small minds have big opinions. Don’t let those voices stop you from creating your dream life.”

“Remind yourself daily that you are good enough, tell yourself in the mirror first thing each morning, that’s what I do! Tell yourself you are worthy, you are a champion and you are successful.”

Mia announced yesterday that she will be launching her new venture – The Startup School – on November 15th.

42570240_509117362900910_7763904493657691074_n.jpg

“The Startup School is a course for anyone wanting to start their own online business. I’ve created this 35 module course which will guide you step-by-step through the entire start-up grind. From coming up with your idea, branding, sourcing suppliers, marketing and so much more.”

Adventures In Wonderland – By Alice

Every time I travel overseas, or locally, I try to capture certain moments through photography. It might not be anything particularly special to the naked eye, but there’s always a story behind every snap. I had always wanted to go overseas as a kid and during my teens, but didn’t have an opportunity until I finished high school in 2012. So in 2013, I decided that I wanted to go somewhere new (either overseas or in Australia) every year. I’ve achieved that so far and hope to keep it up in the coming years. The opportunity to travel shouldn’t be taken for granted. The freedom to meet new people and discover different cultures is so valuable and I think these experiences should be shared!

NEPAL

This beautiful country absolutely stole my heart. From the busy market streets and tourist hubs to the Himalayas and friendly locals – it is the perfect getaway. You won’t regret taking the time to explore this amazing country.

BOUDHANATH STUPA (BOUDHA, KATHMANDU)

The largest stupa in Nepal (and one of the largest in the world), it’s not surprising that this is one of the most popular tourist sites in Kathmandu. It is also the holiest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside of Tibet itself, symbolising the rich Buddhist culture of Tibet and Nepal alike. The stupa was one of many historical sites damaged in the 2015 earthquake and needed rebuilding, then opened again 18 months later in 2016. As well as groups of tourists visiting this stupa, there are also local Buddhists who visit to practice prayer and mindfulness every day. While you’re there, walk a kora (circle) around the stupa while listening to the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra… for a taste of mindfulness practices.

STUPA SQUARE (BOUDHA, KATHMANDU)

The Boudhanath Stupa is surrounded by buildings facing towards it, creating a town circle around it and a community atmosphere. Some of the places occupying these building includes market stalls with arts and crafts, authentic restaurants, coffee shops, rooftop bars (with beautiful views and cheap beers) and an ancient monastery where Monks continue to practice and live.

Healthy Lifestyle tips from Personal Trainer and Fitness Model Kate Collins

36147832_2054015777942150_1517494116991107072_n.jpg

I spoke to Geelong based personal trainer and all-round boss babe Kate Collins about her background in the fitness community and what some of her tips are for those wanting to start and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Tell our readers a little bit about yourself

  • Kate Collins 27

  • Twin.

  • Grew up on property just outside Winchelsea (Geelong)

  • Played every sport at school I could possibly sign up to

  • I have been a personal trainer for 8 years – it’s a passion not just a job.

  • Worked on the Gold Coast for 3 years at one of the biggest gyms in QLD as a personal trainer

  • I have also competed in several IFBB figure comps

How did you first get into PT/fitness?

“Well always been surrounded by sport,  I mean having having a twin is one of the most competitive aspects of wanting to improve or be good at everything I tried.

I played tennis and rode horses from a very young age and always made up games in the paddock, so in terms of fitness, I was always running around.

In primary school I loved hanging with the boys playing footy, soccer and anything to do with being tough and competitive!

With PT, it was something  I was very fascinated by, you don’t need much equipment,  just your hands and an eye for detail and the passion to want to succeed – that was me from a very young age.

I thought I wanted to get into outdoor education after leaving school and soon realised you had to go to uni for many years. That was definitely not me!

So I was working at Anaconda and Bended Elbow (a bar in Geelong) and across the road was the VFA leaning (an educational institute for sports fitness). I constantly looked at it and thought, I need to go there ASAP.

Who wants to spend all day inside, pouring beer, when I could be outside helping people make the most of their lives whilst enjoying the sun. So I walked across the road and signed up!

I could confidently say I was a nerd when it came to the teaching part, I would sit at the front of the room and even study… me + study is probably the biggest oxymoron! But I loved it. I would study in advance it was just perfect for me!

As soon as I got my diploma I walked into Goodlife Geelong and said: yo yo yo. I’m new. I’m excited. Do you need a pt? And Walah I got a job! I was pumped and have been every day since I started.”

Meet the girls making fitness relatable

Sadly, a staggering 89 per cent of Australian women hate the way the look and lack any form of confidence.

A statistic that has only grown since the powerful world of social media made its impression on today’s society.

Too many young woman, and men, compare themselves to the ‘models’ they see on their instagram feeds – with their posed photos, perfect lighting and photoshopped bodies.

So it has been a breath of fresh air to see two Geelong based girls sharing their fitness journey in the realest and most relatable way over social media.

Lauren and Sharee co-manage an instagram account called @freshkinicomp, a page they started to show others what it was like during the good days and the bad days of a fitness journey.

eg

“For me, it’s all about helping females feel confident again and loving themselves, not someone they aspire to be on their phone wallpaper,” says Lauren.

Lauren has been a personal trainer since the age of 19 and now owns her own gym, Toning Fitness, and Sharee is a nutritionist and trainer who used to suffer with an eating disorder.

Sharee describes herself as “a body-positive warrior who is learning to love my body no matter what stage it’s at, I find that a huge deal since I use to battle with an eating disorder,” – an attribute she is trying to teach her clients and those who follow their journey on instagram.

While maintaining their own healthy lifestyles, they are both incredibly passionate about helping other woman to reach their fitness goals and empowering them no matter what size or shape they may be.

“From 16 to 23 my fitness habits went up and down like a yo-yo – gain weight, lose weight – and it wasn’t until I got engaged that I really worked hard at my fitness and kept it a lifestyle! It takes a lot of starting and stopping until you get sick of starting before it becomes a true lifestyle,” says Sharee.

“I was actually a school teacher before this and struggled with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and when I changed my diet my whole fitness excelled, I want to help others who are struggling to lose weight from exercise alone,” she says.

Lauren and Sharee had only been working together for a few weeks when Sharee asked her if she wanted to do a “Bikini Competition” with her, a fitness and physique competition for women.

Instead of just training without others knowing and keeping it to themselves, they decided to start their instagram page, which has gained nearly 700 followers since late March.

“We train females together at Toning Fitness and we share everything with our clients, we did this for them and for anyone else thinking of starting a Bikini Comp for the first time,” says Lauren.

“We wanted to show them what it was like during the good days and the bad days and how dedicated you have to be, because let’s be honest, no one knows how hard it actually is just by seeing posed photos on instagram,” says Sharee.

yoibn.jpg

So far the girls have been doing 5 weight sessions per week; they run for about 2hours (including 15min booty activation warm up and a 15min walk at the end).

They have a coach who sets a meal plan that has only slightly changed since they started.

“We are moving into the last 9 weeks which will change drastically, but we are blissfully unaware just how much. We know we have some interval training cardio soon and carbs will decrease as well,” say the girls.

Going through such a gruelling process that takes a lot of physical and mental strength can be difficult on your own, so both the girls are extremely grateful to have the other to lean on during their preparation.

“We get along so well and see each other for about 2-3hrs every day. I couldn’t imagine doing this without her, we keep each other extremely motivated which has been the real award. I have someone that understands everything I am going through to get  stage ready,” says Lauren.

Both Lauren and Sharee did not expect the amount of support and praise they have received since starting Freshkinicomp and they love that others appreciate their vision of empowering themselves and others to love their bodies.

“We are so overwhelmed by the love we are getting from Instagram, we are just being ourselves and the followers just keep coming. We don’t wear makeup, we don’t try make ourselves look pretty before gym or during weight lifting, we just film, be ourselves 24/7 and hope that everyone likes it,” says Lauren.

“Yes, sometimes people think we are robots, we are just human and it is just as hard for us,” says Sharee.

Lauren and Sharee hope that after they finish their competition they they can continue to motivate others and maybe go into the coaching world themselves.

Their parting words for those who want to make a change or are really struggling with where they’re at physically and mentally in their fitness journey are:

“Stay consistent! Motivation will come and go but if you make a plan, when you do have motivation and stick to it no matter what, then you can achieve your goals.”

Follow the girls on Instagram to keep up to date with the final weeks of their preparation!
